Storm water drains, what they are and how they are used

A storm drain is the grate and underground structure that you can find  alongside the road. This structure allows stormwater to runoff and drain into the underground stormwater sewer system and flowing through pipes run underground. Clearing both roads and parking areas from excess water build up.

When designing a new land development, subdivision or road it is important to take into consideration where the storm water drains are placed.

Storm water drains should be placed at low points such as close to the curbs or in central low points in parking areas.

How to Design Storm Drains

The following are the main steps involved in the design of storm drains.

1.       Determine the locations required for storm drains.

2.       Prepare hydrology calculations to determine stormwater flow rates for the storm drains

3.       Prepare flow spread calculations to determine the amount of water that would back up and over the inlet during a storm event

4.       Determine the inverts of entering and exiting storm sewer pipe and determine the required depths for the storm drains.

At Hannon Civil we are professionals at installing Christchurch and North Canterbury Storm drains. Storm drains are an essential part of new development landscaping and rehabilitation efforts.

Here is an example of a restoration Sewer drain that Hannon Civil completed in Christchurch Central. Due to the damage on this drain it was no longer working at full compacity and would frequently fill with debris causing flooding in the surrounding areas.

After our installation the drain was tested and has greatly improved the storm water flow as well as the aesthetic of the street.
